Current status, by component
Each component has to be designed, sourced and manufactured. Here is the detailed status of each component.
Component | % Cost | Status | Country of Origin | On time? |
Aluminium frame | 15% | Designed, in talks with manufacturers regarding sourcing. | Belgium, Germany or Denmark | Yes |
Electronics | 25% | Designed, first batches already manufactured. | Germany | Early |
Sprockets | 10% | Designed for CNC machining. Many manufacturers just in Belgium. | Belgium | Yes |
Axles | 5% | Designed, for CNC machining too. | Belgium | Yes |
Motors | 10% | Off-the-shelf, but we are looking for a European manufacturer. | China for now | Yes |
Batteries | 10% | Made just for us, first samples in our hands | China | Early |
Wheels | 10% | Off-the-shelf 70mm rollerskate wheels. Many suppliers exist. | Italy, Germany or China | Yes |
Chains | 5% | Off-the-shelf, many suppliers exist. | France, Germany or China | Yes |
Velcro straps | 5% | From Velcro (UK), with possibly some elaboration by specialized companies. | UK, possible going through France or Belgium at some point | Yes |
Screws, nuts, bearings, thermal pads and other | 5% | Off-the-shelf from resellers such as TME (Poland) | Various European countries | Yes |
Some components only exist in China, because the raw materials are mined in China (batteries), or because the only companies making the components to the required specifications are Chinese (motors).
We currently envision about 30% of the raw material cost to be from China. If we factor in assembly (in Belgium), packaging in Belgium, shipping from Belgium, this proportion goes to about 20%. And this is without counting the VAT paid by the customer in their own country.
