What and How? The Preorder Period

Why are we doing preorders? How are we going to use the time and revenue?

You can preorder the KoumKoum on this website, for 300€ less than the sales price once the KoumKoum becomes widely available. You can also cancel your preorder and be refunded at any time. We strive to allow you to preorder the KoumKoum at no risk and with ease.

But why are we doing this?

  • Preorders allows us to gauge demand for the KoumKoum and hence to attract investors more easily
  • Preorders give us the funds to make large orders to our suppliers. This translates to more suppliers answering our emails, better prices for them, and more investment on their side (accepting to make a product variant just for us, instead of having to limit ourselves to some catalog).
  • At the same time, we will use the following months to fine-tune the design of the KoumKoum, collect early user feedback, certify all the components that need certification, and establish a robust supply chain (suppliers, storage, assembly company, efficient shipping).

Where are we?

The most important is that we have a functional prototype (it works, we can ride it). This means that the idea of the KoumKoum is possible to manufacture. We are now refining the design to make it better-looking, stronger, and significantly cheaper to manufacture.

The prototype cost 1200€ a piece (two pieces for two feet!). Nobody would buy a pair of KoumKoums for 2400€ + VAT! All the negotiation with suppliers mentioned above aims at reducing the cost of all the components of the KoumKoum, sometimes by a factor of 10.

We also optimized the electronics for cost-efficiency. While still being Made in EU, using European components (ST Microelectronics, Nexperia, Infineon, Würth), our electronics board now costs less than half it cost before.

In the following video, we show the prototype (very dirty, sorry, it got used a lot outside!), partially disassembled due to ongoing tests, but still showing all the components in their current state. We also show the custom batteries we received a month ago.
